The town of Jelsa is situated in a bay in the middle of the North coast of the island of Hvar and was founded as a port for the village of Pitve in the 14th century. Jelsa also has excellent communications with the mainland, with a daily catamaran service to Split, via Bol on the island of Brac run by Jadrolinija. In addition to the catamaran, nearby Stari Grad runs a comprehensive ferry service to Split.
